FK, I loved this post and agree with you. Growing up under the reign of my former step-family and their very, very conservative and religious POV did not allow for any kind of alcohol to have any place in life other than "sin." Silly, silly. Luckily I have a brain and a smart one at that, deciding moderate drinking (and agnosticism) definitely made me a much happier person.
However, even after ten years of living in Los Angeles, I still am surprised by my home town folks' reactions to my wine industry job and the fact that my husband and I enjoy wine regularly with dinner. It's foreign and scary, as if it automatically means we have some huge drinking problem we excuse with being "cultured" or "classy." Pffft.

In the California bubble, it's easy to assume others might be keen on enjoying wine as casually as we do, but it's just not reality. As much as I love the "wine for everyone" approach in wine marketing - and the mission of many writers and bloggers to "bring wine to the masses," the masses still choose Bud Light or Coors, paired with a Stouffer's oven lasagna.

Oh well - more wine for me. (Sidenote: the ad streaming via AdChoices right above the comments section reads, "Alcohol Treatment Program: Caring, private and holistic healing in Beautiful Del Mar, California." Heh.)

Well, I'd say because Rhone whites are fairly rare, at least outside of the major Northeast and California markets, they tend to be expensive, and why not try this wine because it's terrific...

Call me New-Englandized, but I've always prefer a cider to a wine. Maybe my family will have to learn from the Basques.
