The Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt Josephshöff Riesling Kabinett 2012 derives from one of the german 2smallest crops in Germany’s Mosel region in 30 years. A small crop, however, though inevitably leading to smaller production, can also imply more concentration and intensity, certainly true of this shimmering, glistening wine. The color is moderate pale gold; scents of white pepper, mango, spiced pear and baked apple unfold to whiffs of fennel, quince and ginger, layered with notes of damp limestone and flint. It’s a completely lovely and complex wine, silky and supple, slightly creamy, as befits the ripeness of its fruit, yet lithe and dynamic, in sync with its bright acidity and scintillating limestone minerality. Above all, it’s a golden wine, faintly honeyed despite its dry character, replete with the aura of yellow fruit and meadow flowers, and finishing with exotic spice and a fillip of pink grapefruit. 11 percent alcohol. Drink this exquisite riesling, which should darken and burnish with age, through 2020 to 2022, properly stored. Think pork tenderloin, roasted veal shoulder, trout amandine, grilled sausages. The estate dates to 1349. Excellent. About $23.

Many German wines have names that are a real mouthful of terms and umlauts, so here goes. Our schlossjohannisberg_rieslinggrunlack_labelfront_loreswine today is the Fürst von Metterich Schloss Johannisberg Grünlack Spätlese Riesling 2012, from the Rheingau region.

Schloss Johannisberg is an ancient estate that occupies a magnificent site on a broad hill that slopes in a southerly direction down to the Rhine. Grapes have been grown there apparently since the 12th Century, during monastic days. It has been an all-riesling property since 1720 and was one of the first, if not the first, in Germany to make a late harvest sweet wine from grapes affected by botrytis cinerea, the “noble rot.” In 1816, Schloss Johannisberg was given to Prince von Metternich by the Austrian Franz I for services at the Congress of Vienna — which redrew the map of Europe after Napoleon’s final defeat at Waterloo — and while the Metternich name still appears on the estate’s labels, it was acquired in 1974 by the giant conglomerate Dr. August Oetker KG, manufacturer of baking soda, dessert mixes, frozen pizzas and yogurt and owner of breweries, sparkling wine facilities, hotels and so on.

The color is shimmering pale straw-gold; aromas of peaches and pears, lime peel, jasmine and honeysuckle are highlighted by notes of cloves and a snap of gunflint. It’s almost needless to say that this is very attractive, even seductive stuff. Made 70 percent in stainless steel and 30 percent in oak, the wine is clean and bright, with a subtle graphite influence in the depths and a fine vibrant line of acidity for animation. This is, yes, a fairly sweet version of the Spätlese category, with flavors of ripe and slightly honeyed peaches and apricots, but it’s also beautifully balanced and even a bit dry around the circumference and through the golden finish. 7.5 percent alcohol. A lovely wine for pairing with moderately spicy Thai or Vietnamese fare, with, say, a pork roast cooked with apples, or with simple desserts. Winemaker was Christian Witte. Excellent. About $30.

You know how writers and reviewers sometimes specify the kind of apple and the species of pear that they detect in a wine’s aromas? My usual reaction to that sort of detail is, sotto voce, riesling“Yeah, right, sure.” I swear, though, that my first reaction to the Robert Eymael Mönchhof Riesling 2014, from Germany’s Mosel region, was, “Golden Delicious apples and Anjou pears.” Then slightly baked and roasted Golden Delicious apples and Anjou pears, with hints of lychee and peach, cloves and jasmine. The wine — offering a pale straw-gold hue — is fresh, clean and appealing, just barely sweet, more ripe with stone-fruit goodness than overtly sweet, yet displaying a touch of honeyed quince and ginger in the background. From mid-palate back, the crystalline acidity kicks in, as well as a scintillating element of flinty minerality, keeping the wine on a tasty and even keel. It would take a heart of stone not to find this riesling absolutely delightful. 9.5 percent alcohol. The estate goes back to 1171, with Cistercian monks, but the Aymael family acquired it in 1804, purchased from Napoleon. Robert Eymael is the sixth generation of the family to run the property. The wines are produced 70 percent in stainless steel tanks, 30 percent in large, old oak casks. Drink as a charming aperitif or with slightly spicy Asian cuisine, pork roast with apples, wiener schnitzel or charcuterie. Excellent. About $18, a local purchase; prices around the country start as low as $12 and go up to $20.

In some ways, it’s more fun to compile the “25 Great Wine Bargains” than it is to fret over the “50 Great Wines.” This present list of wines priced at $20 and under offers more geographical and varietal diversity, as well as appealing to people — most of the wine-drinkers on the face of the earth — would would rather pay $15 for a bottle of excellent wine than $150 for a bottle of exceptional wine. What’s particularly pleasing about today’s roster is that of the 25 wines included, all but two rate Excellent. The truth is that wines don’t have to be high-priced to be thoughtfully and precisely made or to embody all the characteristics of a terrific drink. An excellent sauvignon blanc for $11? Who would pass that up? These 25 Great Wine Bargains are cause for celebration, so have at it. Remember, though, that not all wines are available in every market. For bottles that can’t be found in your local retail stores, a search on the Internet may be helpful. Enjoy!

We tend to know when a wine is great from the first sniff and taste, because it possesses that ineffable yet very real quality called charisma. Renewed sniffing and tasting confirm that assessment, while adding depth and character. These factors hold true whether a wine costs $19 or $350, the range represented in today’s 2015 edition of the annual “50 Great Wines” post. I wouldn’t pay $350 for a bottle of wine — though apparently some people would — but I appreciate the occasional opportunity to encounter one. Of the wines on today’s roster, 18 rate Exceptional and 32 rate Excellent. Often the dividing line between Excellent and Exceptional is fine indeed, with permutations and intimations running silent and deep in each direction, but since my inclination is toward distinctions, rankings and hierarchies — that’s what graduate school will do for you — I always include a rating for each wine reviewed on BTYH. On the other hand, I refuse to employ the famous 100-point system; I would rather leave room for some ambiguity and imagination.

A great wine satisfies every point of interest and essence that we desire from a wine, exuding a feeling of utter completion and comprehension. Each wine accomplishes this purpose in a different way, of course, and to varying degrees, necessitating different responses. Some of these wines I admire, gravely and humbly; others, I adore rather shamelessly. The ultimate test, I think, is that when we drink a bottle of great wine, our conclusion is thus: “I wouldn’t want it to be anything other than this,” a sentiment we might also share with works of art and love affairs.

Today’s roster is presented alphabetically. Where a wine is a blend of grapes, I include the percentages that compose the blend. I also mention the case production for wines released in limited quantities, of which many on this list, not surprisingly, are. I do not include alcohol levels or names of importers or technical, geographical or historical date That sort of information is available in the reviews. These wines were selected from examples that I wrote about during 2015. The preponderance were samples for review, for which I thank the wineries, importers and marketing people who sent them.

For whatever eccentricities this list of “50 Great Wines of 2015” embodies, blame them on my taste, knowledge, experience and intuition. That is all I — or any of us — have to go on.

Looking for a wine to accompany a pasta dish that featured collard greens, ham and tomatoes, I twisted off the cap of the BEX Riesling 2014, made in the region of Germany designated Nahe, from the river of that name that flows northeast to the Rhine. This is a fairly simple and direct but exceedingly pleasing riesling whose touches of complexity give it a gratifying layered sense. The color is very pale straw-gold with faint green highlights; the bouquet offers subtle notes of jasmine and green apple, peach and yellow plum and hints of heather and honey. This is just off-dry, delivering a touch of sweetness on the entry but segueing to a dry, mineral-laden finish that feels like lavender-dusted steel. A whiff of gunflint provides intrigue; the texture is almost lush, but lithe and jazzed by bright acidity. 10 percent alcohol. Pretty damned charming. Very Good+. About $10, representing Real Value.

Though the estate was founded in 1811 by Sebastian Alois Prüm, records attest that the family had been growing grapes in the Mosel prum_luminance_lab_smsince 1156. Since 1971, the 40-acre property has been run by S.A. Prüm’s grandson Raimond and his daughter Saskia Andrea, who is positioned to take over complete operations. Today, I offer for your simple enjoyment the S.A. Prüm Luminance Riesling 2013, Mosel, a delightful wine that will not set you back on your heels in wonderment nor deal your wallet a death-blow. Made from 100 percent riesling grapes, all in stainless steel tanks, the wine exudes freshness and exuberance. The color is pale straw-gold; aromas of lightly spiced peaches and pears open to notes of lychee and heather, with just a hint of the grape’s petrol nature. The label says “dry,” though I would describe the wine as “mostly dry-ish,” primarily because of the gushing ripeness of its stone-fruit flavors, neatly held in check by a rather luminous limestone and slate minerality and scintillating acidity. The charming finish brings in touches of tangerine and jasmine. 12.5 percent alcohol. Drink through the Spring of 2016 as aperitif or with light fish and seafood dishes or even a veal roast. Very Good+. About $15, a Sweet Deal.

The word “interesting,” of course, is a double-edged sword, as when one says that someone’s boyfriend or girlfriend is interesting, meaning “What a dork!” No, I don’t mean that! I mean interesting as “of real interest to My Readers” and white wines to look out for as alternatives to chardonnay, sauvignon blanc and riesling. Not that there’s anything wrong with those grapes — well, chardonnay is too often over-made and fiddled with — and I’m distinctly fond of sauvignon blanc and especially reisling. Many more types of white wine exist, however, and it’s in that less-traveled direction that I send My Readers today. We touch many countries and regions and a variety of grapes, both single and in fascinating and somewhat exotic blends. Look particularly at the wines priced between $11 and $17; real bargains abound there. As usual, I avoid lengthy mentions of technical, historical and geographical information in this Weekend Wine Notes — though I dote on that sort of material — for the sake of quick, incisive reviews deigned to pique your, ahem, interest and whet your palates. Tenuta Sant’Antonio Scaia Bianca 2014, Delle Venezia IGT, Italy. 12% alc. 55% garganega, 45% chardonnay, according to the label; website and printed material say 50% garganega, 30% chardonnay, 20% trebbiano Soave. Medium straw-gold color; ripe, lively, crisp, bristly; brimming with notes of green apple and melon, lemon and peach; a few minutes in the glass bring in hints of jasmine and gardenia, lime peel and grapefruit; very dry, zings and sings across the palate with bright acidity and tantalizing limestone elements; heaps of personality. Excellent. About $11, a Raving Amazing Bargain.

Pale straw color with faint green highlights; delicate, lightly spicy, a slight sense of sunny, leafy figs and briers; all citrus with a flush of stone-fruit; a few minutes in the glass bring in heady notes of lilac and Evening in Paris; very appealing, with a beautiful texture and structure that fill the mouth with almost powdery talc-like elements cut by bright acidity. Drink now through 2017. Excellent. About $16.

Bodega de Txakoli Tadai Berri Alleme Txakolina 2014, Getariako Txakolina. NA% alc. 100% hondarribi zuri grapes. The wine is pronounced chakoli; txakolina means “the txakoli.” The hondarribi zuri grape is primarily grown, where it is cultivated at all, in Spain’s Basque country. Very pale straw color; just faintly effervescent, as a sort of quiet, persistent tickle; white flowers and yellow fruit, let’s say, gardenia, peach and yellow plums, all quite gently expressed, with hints of almond blossom and lychee; lively, crisp, clean, caressing. Drink up as a very pleasant and unusual aperitif; these wines are not meant to last. Very Good+. About $17.

Very pale gold color; peach, roasted lemon and lavender; slightly honeyed, with notes of beeswax, dried thyme and rosemary, with the latter’s hint of resiny quality; very clean, pure and intense, lovely presence and weight; more on the graceful, spare and elegant side of the grape, though a hint of caramelized fennel lends something exotic; a lingering finish that turns a bit austere with limestone and flint minerality. Now through 2018 to 2020. Excellent. About $24.

Anaba Wines Turbine White 2013, Sonoma Valley, California. 14% alc. 42% roussanne, 20% grenache blanc, 20% picpoul blanc, 18% marsanne. 354 cases. Shimmering pale gold hue; roasted lemon, dried thyme, beeswax, lanolin, lilac; notes of heather and peach and a hint of some exotic floral and pressed nut oil; bountifully presents a full-bodied, seductive texture packed with spiced and roasted peach and apricot flavors but balanced by riveting acidity and an element of damp-stone minerality. Super appealing, practically glitters in the glass. Excellent. About $28, and Worth a Search.

As with so many estates in European wine regions, Weingut Leitz has an interesting story. Though official records place the Leitz family in the winemaking industry of the Rheingau as far back as 1744, it wasn’t until the early 1960s that Josef Leitz rebuilt a leitzwinery damaged by Allied bombing near the end of World War II. His grandson, Johannes Leitz, took over the estate in 1985, turning the family’s interests primarily to the reisling grape. Starting with the 2.9 hectares the family owned — 7.16 acres — Johannes expanded the Leitz holdings to 43 hectares — about 106 acres — in 2014. Of that quantity, spread over a dozen individual vineyards, the area that produced the wine under review today, the Leitz Rudesheimer Berg Schlossberg Riesling Trocken 2013, Rheingau, measures exactly 1.17 hectares. The slope of Berg Schlossberg is 58 degrees, meaning that tending the vines and harvesting grapes can be extremely taxing, if not downright hazardous. The soil that supports (if that’s the word) this vineyard is a very hard and rocky red slate clay with quartzite mixed in, meaning that the vines have to struggle to root downward and find water and nutrients. The stress causes the vines to reduce the size and number of grapes, but those grapes exhibit great aromas, body and character. The Leitz Rudesheimer Berg Schlossberg Riesling Trocken 2013 offers a very pale gold hue and enticing scents of lemon balm, lime peel and peach that open to notes of quince and crystallized ginger; touches of cloves and talc add to the perfume. You must prepare yourself for what happens next, because this is a wine of palate-shattering acidity and scintillating chalk and limestone minerality; the words lively and crisp scarcely begin to describe the shimmering vibrancy that animates this exceptionally dry riesling. If that were all there was to it, we could take our puckery mouths and go elsewhere, but fortunately the wine also embodies touches of stone-fruit flavors, hints of baking spice and slightly candied flowers and an almost subliminal breeze of fresh seacoast salinity. The alcohol content is an eminently manageable 12.5 percent. Drink now through 2020 to 2025. We had this wine with swordfish seared in a cast-iron skillet in a coffee rub with urfa and maresh peppers. Excellent. About $20, an Amazing Value.

Perhaps what you desire is a riesling that offers a touch of sweetness to balance the spice and mild heat of an Indian curry or pad thai or some similar dish from Southeast Asia that delivers multiple layers of flavor and temperature. I have a candidate for that office. It’s an inexpensive wine from Germany’s Rheinhessen region, the Georg Albrecht Schneider Niersteiner Paterberg Riesling Kabinett 2012, and it draws on the sweeter extension of the Kabinett purview, Kabinett being, to express the matter simply, the driest category of Germany’s classified wines. I don’t mean that the wine is cloying or dessert-like, only that its intense ripeness slides across the palate with a feeling of juicy, slightly roasted and brandied citrus and stone-fruit flavors steeped in green tea. The color is medium straw-gold; an enveloping softness of peach, pear, lychee and lime peel trembles from the glass, augmented by traces of candied orange rind and pink grapefruit, this subtle and nuanced panoply of delights anchored by a distinct sense of leafy, loamy earthiness; a few moments of swirling, sniffing and sipping bring out touches of quince and ginger and an echo of caramelized fennel. This completely pretty wine plunges across the taste-buds like liquid money, nothing profound but eminently attractive. 10 percent alcohol. Drink now through 2017 or ’18. Very Good+. About $15.
