A California vintner told about being hesitant to order his own wine by-the-glass when dining out "for fear of what they might bring me."

It is not uncommon for restaurants/bars to sell one wine and pour something else. Your point about bringing the bottle and pouring it tableside is spot on, though a sharpie bartender could refill an empty bottle with some other plonk than that advertised.

And don't think this doesn't happen...with so many restaurants struggling to make ends meet, fleecing the unsuspecting customer with some wine chicanery is quite common.

A friend from California told me that wineries there even sell to restaurants at (often) significantly lower prices to have their wine featured on a wine list. (Stores pay more, restaurants which mark up the wine to often ridiculous levels, pay far less.)
Seems wrong to me.

Tommaso, it was not my intention to drink four glasses of wine. two or three, but not four, the waiter brought that one by mistake. if i had known, sure, i would have ordered the bottle. so altogether it was a comedy of errors.
