Did you know that the real major force that caused Pombal to Nationalize the Port industry, was to find a way to pay to rebuild Lisbon which had been destroyed in the earthquake of 1755. The quake, ensuing Tsunami and fire destroyed the capital city and Pombal had a plan on how to raise capital. That was even more critical that thickening his own wallet.

yeah, I was v. impressed by Niepoort, especially a couple of ’66 ports Dirk Niepoort opened for us.

thanks for pointing that out about Pombal. it’s like the 1855 clssification in Bordeaux. people forget now that it was the city chamber of commerce that devised the thing, all as a marketing effort for the region; now it’s like a religion.

I love Niepoort products…all of them.

Interesting sidebar about the codifying of Port. Pombal had financial interests in the industry, so it was to his benefit to codify how it operated. In fact, his career ended in disgrace and he was sent packing by the locals.
