I just discovered this series last night when Wannabe Wino told me about it.

One word...

Awesome! This is just a great idea and a wonderful book should be in the making.

I have been going back through my tasting notes (all digital not in a book - though the romance and nostalgia of a book is a thing of beauty) for the last 6 or so years and I was thinking of posting them. Nowhere near the depth and majesty of these wines though.

Yes, please do try to be more regular about the 100 Wines. Really good reading!

Thanks, Thom, I'll try to be more regular about the "100 Wines" postings. Say, I wonder if there's a book in this series?

I hope the weather is good this weekend in the Smokies. It's supposed to cool off slightly here but there's a chance of rain.

Geessh, It's about time for another posting. I love to read and talk to old timers that had the opportunity to taste the great and interesting wines before they got all worldly and homogenized! I've known some very generous people with deep cellars that took great pleasure in sharing their knowledge and wines. I try and continue to do the same.
Nothing gives me greater pleasure then sharing a great bottle with someone thirsty for knowledge.
You know how much I enjoy what you do...but this gives me a special pleasure.
Have a great 4th and keep cool.

I vastly prefer old labels to new, modern, "cool" labels designed by marketing departments and professional design firms. The old ones just have more character, more authenticity. You'll see more of these old-fashioned labels in this Chronicle series in the next few weeks (or months).

I love looking at the layout of these old labels, and that design has to have been created originally in the 1950s. Laid out by hand, using razorblades and tape, registration is slightly off, the borders don't meet up properly at the corners...

It's kind of like looking at the shifting fur in the original King Kong movie, really the fingerprints of the puppeteers as the model was moved around to create the illusion of motion. Imperfections to be sure, but evidence of physical human touch.
