Heurich ceased operations in March of 2006. There are, however, many viable breweries still in the greater DC metropolitan area, and three brewpubs in DC proper.

Yes, I know, perhaps I'm being too chauvinistic wanting the White House to feature the diversity of American products, though it is a great opportunity. You make a good point with the coffee. And I bet when the kitchen prepares rack of lamb that the meat comes from New Zealand. Even salt and pepper (especially pepper) can travel long distances to get to our tables. If you go too far, this kind of thing will drive you crazy.

It brought a little tear to my eye that you included Gruet. I love that place, and desperately want to go back. If you bring it up to a group that has never tried it, they'll laugh, but I'm happy to stand up and defend the fine New Mexico sparkling wine.

Some have suggested that Obama break with tradition and allow non-American wines to be served at state functions. Nixon had his beloved Chateau Margaux served to him in covered bottles to avoid scandal, but our founding fathers were certainly fond of good Continental wines and spirits. And as a nation of immigrants, many of us consume various beverages that hail from beyond the shores of our sweet land of liberty.

Which makes me think... Does all of the coffee served at presidential functions come from Hawaii?
