So, I’m embarrassed. I concluded my post Friday about BTYH winning the “Best Wine Reviews” category in the American Wine Blog Awards with the injunction, “So, back to work.” But I didn’t do it!
Well, you have probably inferred, readers, that one of the philosophies of this blog is Never to Go Off-Topic, and while it may occasionally seem as if I skirt perilously close to violating that principle, I try to make certain that every post has something to do with drinking or eating. A five-day hiatus, however, seems to me reason enough to edge down the slippery slope of the personal and mention that I have been, as the phrase goes, “under the weather,” though isn’t that an interesting way of saying that one has been ill, since, we are always, when you think about it logically, under some kind of weather. Stew about that for a while.
Anyway, I apologize, and I’ll get things back in motion in a couple of days. Until then, thanks for all the positive reaction to the award, both here on the blog and in email messages.
You all are just so freakin’ nice!

Stay well.
PS: Here in the Finger Lakes, “under the weather” is a weak definition of how we live. It’s snowing right now–dammit!
Next week, I’m changing the direction of my blog. It’s occurred to em that I’m appealing to so few people, I might as well talk to myself, which in fact, I likely have been doing for the past few weeks. But don’t worry, Fredric, I’m not shooting for an award for next year, and when, er, if I win I shall not show up to accept it…

you are, Thomas, to this sensibility, one of the few people about whom I would want to hear on a blog. There’s nothing like a little gravitas to get my attention.

I checked everyday and nothing. I was getting concerned and when I was shopping at the grocery yesterday, checked a few milk cartons to be sure.
Still waiting with bated breath on the next “100″ installment.
Hope you are feeling better, it sucks to be sick!

That was baited breath!(i know how you English teacher types are with spelling)

Thom,
Weren’t you a wine retailer? If so, then “bated” is ok
March 13th, 2009 at 5:05 pm
I thought “Bated” as in breath was a contraction for “abated.” So you were right at the start, Calabrese.
Color me embarrassed that I’m seeing this post only now on Friday evening. Forgive me. But I had wondered what the hell was up with you.
Now let’s talk about me — the official blog of Domenico Selections is up and running, not without a few technical and formatting glitches, piccolezze.

Okay so I wasn’t the best in grammar. I mean hell, I even cheated off the smart girl and still had to go to summer school. Baited, bated, masturbated, what have you.
Thomas I was in the wholesale end of the wine business.
Strappo I will check out Domenico Selections.
Where are you located?
I’m enjoying a glass of wine and listening to Adriano Celentano
Ciao
March 13th, 2009 at 10:10 pm
Calabrese, if you can enjoy Adriano Celentano, you are a stronger uomo than I.
Ich bin ein New Yorker. Das Domenico Selections is located in La Grande Mela, aka Noo Yawk.
The main Q: what wine are you drinking? If it’s some Californication thing, you are MORTO to me, capisci??
March 13th, 2009 at 10:54 pm
I went to the website. I’d be interested in finding out more about the wines you import.
Abito in Asheville,N.C. ma sono da Jersey City(Adriano piaccio ma voglio parlo italiano) I hope that’s close
Bevo vino da Spagna.
My family is still across the river from you and I will be up for a visit soon.
Would love to know where I can have a glass/buy a bottle of these wines. I have a soft spot for Italian wines and love to find new ones.
Are you just starting the importing biz?

Strappo,
Get yourself over to is-wine, on 8th Street between 5th and 6th, if you haven’t already.
Thom, are you a Gaetano or a Tomasso?
It looks like noi compari prendersi Fredric’s blog…
Brooklyn-born here.
March 14th, 2009 at 8:41 am
Mi chiamo Tomasso.
I lived in Park Slope in the late 70′s on 2nd between 7th and 8th. That was before it got so crazy rent wise.
So Thomas, I’m always looking for new places to check out wine wise when I come up.
What do you think are the must see places in the city?
I usually make it up in May around my B’day(15th) but I might go mid April.
Anyway, love to talk about vino e cibo (e mangio e bevo)
ciao

Thom,
I lived around the corner from you, on 8th Ave and 2nd St.–in the 70s!–in one of those limestone buildings on the east side of 8th.
I grew up around 5th Avenue and Union Street, way before the 70s
Anyway, I’ve been living in the Finger Lakes for the past 25 years. I used to own is-wine in Manhattan but sold out my share five years ago.
I don’t hang around the city much these days. But is-wine is still in existence, and the owner was my partner–he took my lead, which was to seek wines that aren’t all over the media–a lot of unknown stuff on the shelves. He also owns a wine bar in the Village called Dove.
I might be passing through April 16 and 24, on my way to Newark Airport for a trip to the West Coast.

Gosh, I’m so glad I could provide this social networking moment for you guys.

We had to talk about something during the silence. Glad to see you’re back!
