Readers, this comment is from Terence Hughes; he submitted it Tuesday but for whatever annoying techno-glitchy reason, it didn't take:

"Actually, you could order the house wine in Napoli, Steve. Chances are it would be a Feudi di San Gregorio anyway.

"Don't take the 3.5% DOC figure too seriously. A lot of the wines are IGT -- like a couple of the ones Fredric liked so much from Reale -- because they don't conform to the local disciplinare by using "unlisted" grapes. It's this use of the great raw material growing right outside the cantina door that makes Campania so exciting. Grapes like Pepella and Tintore have long been native to tiny patches of territory and only now are being treated with the care and respect that they merit.

"In Campania, Tuscany and other regions, IGT can mean outstanding wines that exceed most DOC's in their character and originality."

Luigi Reale sent me a correction after reading your reviews, FK. The Borgo di Gete spends 15 months in oak, not 10. This will be corrected on the website soon.

Campania still makes a fair amount of DOC wines and there are tons of wineries. Three.five percent just shows you how much wine is really made overall. I remember reading that the zone of Lacryma Christi makes 1.3 million bottles a year. Contrast that with some Tuscan(and others)wineries that make that much themselves.

Wow only 3.5% DOC! I guess that means don't order a glass of the house wine in Naples!

I haven't had any of these wines but good for Domenico Selections for making them available.

Thanks for mentioning the Century Club!

FK, I wrote a long and detailed comment last evening, in which I provided more background and info about the wines and the subregions they come from. But sometimes these blogging programs are from hunger.

I can't recall what I wrote, but I can tell you that Luigi Reale corrected me on something. The Borgo di Gete is in oak for 15 months, not ten. Lapsus lapis, ha ha. It will be fixed on the Domenico Selections website soon.

Grazie mille!
