Benito,

Your story reminds me of the time I tasted 15 grappi at Nonino's place in Friuli Venezia Giulia.

Actually, you remind me of that time, but I can't remember it well at all...

I've done marathon wine tastings before of 20+ bottles (I know the real pros can do a hundred), but after nine Ports I was ready for a blanket and an accommodating couch.

From my notes my favorites were the Smith Woodhouse Reserve, which I thought would be a perfect introductory Port for a newcomer, and the Dow 10 Year which was everything a good tawny should be.

Yeah, well, some of us aren't smart enough to go somewhere else!

This may be a long winter--it's too cold, too early. WTF is this nonsense about global warming anyway?

Now, now, it ain't a contest. I would never put Memphis up against the Finger Lakes. Did you know, btw, that I spent my early childhood in Rochester? We didn't move to Memphis until I was 10. I certainly remember snow on the ground for about five solid months of the year. And splashing around in Lake Ontario in the summer.

I've not been impressed either with Dow's or Graham's that I've tried. Nothing wrong with them--just not much exciting about them, and I agree on the Smith Woodhouse Colheita 94.

Next time you do this, get a hold of some Niepoorts. Marvelous stuff--all of it.

One more thing: you want blustery and chilly, I doubt Memphis compares with what we are getting in the Finger Lakes. I may have already downed 1 1/2 bottles of Port this week alone ;)
