From my notes my favorites were the Smith Woodhouse Reserve, which I thought would be a perfect introductory Port for a newcomer, and the Dow 10 Year which was everything a good tawny should be. I’ve done marathon wine tastings before of 20+ bottles (I know the real pros can do a hundred), but after nine Ports I was ready for a blanket and an accommodating couch.

From my notes my favorites were the Smith Woodhouse Reserve, which I thought would be a perfect introductory Port for a newcomer, and the Dow 10 Year which was everything a good tawny should be.

I would never put Memphis up against the Finger Lakes. Did you know, btw, that I spent my early childhood in Rochester? We didn't move to Memphis until I was 10. Nothing wrong with them--just not much exciting about them, and I agree on the Smith Woodhouse Colheita 94. Next time you do this, get a hold of some Niepoorts. Marvelous stuff--all of it.
