Well, their press release got a lot of play from you... but doesn't inspire me to follow suit. Thanks for sharing, though.

They represent beverage companies, while they dream it up in New York City's concrete jungle... Far from wine country... Far from vineyards and rolling hills, so their perception is not the normal reality from out here where it's going on. You probably won't get too many more like that one (thankfully), so take heart, Fredric.

Well, from what I remember, Sideways was first a piece of writing fiction, then a movie. But I could be wrong. I also think that the 1976 Paris tasting was not, as the press release Fredric points to states, a proclamation of California Chardonnays and Cabernets as the best in the world, but that the winners in their class beat their French counterparts in a blind tasting.

Not only do PR people have homework problems, they often harbor fairly decent talents for fiction.

Hi, Jezebel, thanks for the comments. You're certainly right about "Sideways." The background could have been stamp collecting and the structure for the movie would have been intact. The wine part really got blown out of proportion by the media. I'm glad to see that you have a favorable response to "Bottle Shock." I've sort of been dreading it.

Very interesting that completely unrelated wineries are trying to piggyback upon an upcoming film.

But to answer your questions: yes and no. Sideways was a comedy that used wine as an interesting backdrop - they could have used some other backdrop other than wine and it could have been just as good.

Bottle Shock is based on a unique and important event in the wine industry. And having seen it, I can say they have weaved a compelling story around it. The movie is about the events leading up to the tasting. A financially teetering winery, a combative father/son relationship, underdogs trying to get something, anything good to happen.

Do we need another movie about the same Judgement of Paris event? I doubt it, but it seems that other "movie" you allude to hasn't gotten off the ground yet.
