Some states have limits on the number of bottles one can purchase & ship in any given month. The states actually audit people! Seems a bit excessive...

France seems to be in policy-making overdrive right now. Eventually they'll figure out how silly it all is. Now, if they could actually catch their folly in suggesting that adding wood chips to wine be legal again...

I think we have more to fear from corporations than from the govt. Money trumps mere power in our society.

Benito, that is a good call on your part.

The insidious encroachments are the ones that people overlook.

The warnings along the lines of "contains peanuts" on a jar of peanuts are bad enough, but here's something that's really scary for those that fear a second wave of Prohibition in this country:

I've been in a couple of bars (and this happened at the Coors brewery tour) where the barcode on the back of my driver's license was scanned before I was permitted to enter.

I'm not paranoid, but I had to wonder what would have happened if I'd gotten a simple speeding ticket afterwards. Would I have been nailed with a DUI for having a beer an hour earlier based on the scanned data? In the future will my wine purchases be tied to my DL and if I exceed a certain amount per month will I be warned by the government or my auto or health insurance company?

Yep. We live in an era of victims.

It always makes me laugh that while people want government out of our lives, people also want government to step into our lives.

When it comes to alcohol, however, there is a more sinister thing going on behind the warnings. It's a modern moralist movement for global prohibition, just like smoking.

I agree Gabriella people need to be accountable of their own action. I would like to see just one big warning:
REMEMBER TO SWITCH YOUR BRAIN ON BEFORE DOING ANYTHING.
Buona Bevuta (responsibly) a Tutti

Awhile ago, we had written a piece based on a threat incited by the FDA to place a warning on the back of wine stating that it may be been clarified by egg whites or gelatin to prevent those who are allergic to said substances to stay clear. Although I am completely sympathetic to such issues, I feel like labels have become a forum for every psychological, physical or emotional fear. At what point do adults take responsibility for their health and well-being, using commonsense and logic to set their own boundaries as to what they should and should not consume, read, act upon, etc.?!!!! If you read an article or watch a documentary, are you so gullible to what's fed to you that you have no free will of your own to make a thoughtful decision? Is an article on Tempranillo going to rile you up so profoundly that you feel impelled to buy 12 cases and consume them in one sitting? I feel like we're continually dumbing down people, supporting their poor choices with lawsuits and warnings.

Very public-spirited, FK. I haven't your spirit of public service, the concern for the public good.

On the other hand, I do have my own wine-blog groupie.

You can't have everything.
