More locally speaking, high prices in Tennessee have a bit something to do with demand, supply, and a legalized cartel of wholesalers.

Because there are a lot of Russians, Indians, Chineses, Coreans and many more with a ton of money and a geographically limited acknowledge of wine, that make them buy a lot of Bordeaux and Burgundy at stupid prices.

Seriously, as an old coot, I remember working in wine retail in 1972-73 and being able to get tremendous bottles of Burgundy (as well as Bordeaux) for a song. Even though I was hard up for money (plus ca change) I’d buy $12, $15, $18 bottles at a steep discount (at cost) — bottles that would cost $100 and up, way up, today. The main customers for the wines were the then-impoverished “there’s been a war on” Brits. Vem was the dyes.

I guess we won’t see much 2005 Burgundy, alas. As an aside, however, the plunging $ isn’t the fault of the Euro, but of….Guess Who Bubba’s insane fiscal policies. Good thing we have American wine; the $ can’t go too low for that, unless the Chinese (or offshore quaffers)bid it up.
