Legitimate questions, sir. Remember that in the introductory paragraph to the reviews of those Beringer chardonnays, I said that I was surprised that ultimately, despite the super-ripeness and staggering use of oak, even the Private Reserve and the Sbragia-Limited Release managed to show balance. Only a great winemaker could pull off that feat. I do hope that it's clear that these are far from the kinds of chardonnays that I would drink, but I have to express admiration for Sbragia's skill here. Not, however, with the Sbragia Family Home Ranch Chardonnay in the review that follows those.

Ed Wood and Ed Sbragia? And I thought my wine and music pairings were weird.

Anyhow, FK, thanks to your beautifully precise descriptions I have the feeling that I'm glad no one sent me these wines for review. For once.

Why do you award two of them with an "excellent" at all, even with the disclaimer that you did so reluctantly? They are so obviously the kind of Chardonnays you dislike, even disdain. Is it a way of saying, "I don't really like this sort of thing, but for this sort of thing, they're damned good"?

If it were just you, a civilian blogger not a pro reviewer assigning a score to the wines, wouldn't you have given a different, lower rating?
