Moore Bros is a good shop and they do take temp very seriously. All 3 of their stores - NYC, south Jersey, and Delaware are kept at 55-60 degrees - they keep fleeces on hand for shoppers. Tehir shipping too is at 56 degrees - as was mentioned, its prominent on the label. They tend to work with smaller growers and focus on old world and old world style wines.

Thanks, Fredric. It was a '96, about which more at:

http://www.cellarnotes.net/chateau_angelus.html

and

http://wineaccess.com/store/finewineinternational/ecommerce/product.html?product_id=262228

I've no idea how reliable these opinions are; they may be just blurbs.

Hey, Rob, that usually happens when the humidity has been consistently low in a cellar (or store) and the cork has dried out so much that it shrinks. Assuming that the bottle had been lying on its side, when you stood it upright, it slide down the neck. Too bad about the Angelus; I hope it wasn't a great year.

I was opening a bottle of Château Angélus last night and, after removing the capsule, could not see the cork: it had fallen down into the bottle. Has any one else had that experience? Do you know what might cause it?

That's nice to know. In fact, when I was up there a few weeks ago, someone mentioned Moore Brothers as a good place for buying wine, but I didn't get a chance to go there. Maybe next time.

Too right about the overheated stores, FK. By contrast I went into the Moore Brothers shop near Union Square, which is kept very chilly all the time. They make a big deal about their wines being shipped in refrigerated containers, etc., as if they were in cave. Nice shtik anyway.
