I was searching the Internet trying to find label art for the Hess Allomi Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2004 — and never did find any, even on the winery website, which is irritating as hell — and landed on the wine-selling site, WineChateau.com, the motto for which is “Your Low Price Guide to Good Taste.” What I found left a bad taste in my mouth.
WineChateau.com is having a sale on the Hess Allomi 2004. Regular price, $34.79; sale price, $25.39.
Lucky buyer, right?
Except that the suggested retail price of the wine is — ta-dah! — $25.
I thought you would like to know.
The site is found at http://www.WineChateau.com

BevMo does this, too (worse). Their $60 Gabbiano Alleanza Supertuscan was advertised as two for one recently. The thing is, the wine’s retail price is really $30.00.
They might’ve got caught by someone, because that “sale” is gone now, with the wine sold at the “proper” price. (Not criticizing the wine itself at all-it was frankly very delicious)

Hi, Brian, thanks for the comment. I mean I know we live in a capitalistic society and “the buyer has to beware” and all that, but, really, some of this price-gouging is unconscionable. To which you have to add shipping if you’re buying on-line.
That is a good wine, we had a bottle a few nights ago with beef chuck braised for hours in red wine and served on polenta. A good fit with each other.

Yep, I agree with you, Fredric. Nice blog and nice site-Aldo at Vinography should be complemented for his great blogroll!
Unrelated Question, though: Is the Hoopes Cab one of those oak-y, “Caramelly” Napa Cabs? I really like the more “Old World” earthy/savory/leathery style, and I am nervous about Napa wines. From your description, it sounds like it might be more to my taste than some (I had a bad experience the past week).

Hey, Brian, thanks for the comments. And no, Hoopes is not over-oaked and caramelly, I know exactly what you’re talking about and don’t blame you for being nervous. The Hoopes, while quite dense and intense, is more in the Old World style that you prefer. Too bad it’s so costly. And what wine did you have a bad experience with? No beating around the bush on BTYH, please!

Tamber Bey Oakville 2003. Beautiful label, reasonable price (relatively) lovely winery located on one of the loveliest roads in the valley (Yount Mill Road north of the village of Yountville) but an absolute harsh (to me) caramel monster. I didn’t even find the fruit that nice (like Silver Oak, another over-oaked wine that is at least smooooothhhh) I mean, I like Zinfandel, but this is supposed to be a Cab!
But you know, a friend at the dinner loved it and took it home where other people the next day loved it. Tastes vary, and I can’t say one person’s taste is “better.” Still, one sip and it was major “bleh” for me.
